Pigeon Lake 2011

Congratulations to all who raced the Pigeon Lake RR this past weekend. And a special "shout out" to Greg Dycke for his exceptional result (2nd place) in the Cat 3 RR. Thanks also to Masa Higuchi for submitting a great race report for this category. Read on....

Here’s a brief race recap from the Pigeon Lake Cat 3 Road Race today, purely from my perspective:

"4 of us bicisport riders lined up on a beautiful and calm (anything is calm compared to what we saw at Velocity) day at Pigeon Lake to tackle the 111km Cat 3 road race. Since PL is typically a very predictable race where it ends in an uphill group sprint, we went in with a loose plan of keeping Greg Dycke as fresh as possible and as close to the front as possible for the final 200m. There was some action in the first 2 of 4 laps, with a few solo attacks going up the road with ERTC, Bow Cycle, and Calgary Cycle being particularly aggressive. Our plan was to essentially ignore any of these moves, as the course and conditions didn’t exactly favour small breaks. Luckily, in Cat 3 we do not get called wheel suckers or yelled at if you don’t take a meaningless pull in the first part of a road race.
As we moved into the middle of the 3rd lap, Greg Dycke, Tommy Mak, and I started to patrol the front third of the pack and even put in a “feeler” attack up one of the small bumps (not really hills). Midway through the 4th and last lap the pack was still in tact, with about 30 of the starters still left in contention. Attacks and accelerations were becoming much more frequent, and there always seemed to be a rider about 10 – 15 seconds up the road.

I don’t know about everyone else, but at this point I was starting to get some serious cramps in both quadriceps, and getting out of the saddle seemed impossible. For some reason I never seem to be able to finish PL without at least some level of cramping. The idea of trying to lead out Greg from 600m to 200m seemed pretty much impossible at this time, so with about 5km to go I went to plan B. I went straight to the front and started trading pulls with an ERTC rider and a Juventus rider, to keep the pace as high as possible to discourage any late breaks. After we made the final right turn to the finishing straight with 2km to go, an attack on the left side strung out the pack, but I saw that both Greg and Tommy were in good positions, so I figured my job was done. However, a few moments later the pack slowed down and bunched up somewhat. When your team has one of the better finishers on a hill, the worst thing that can happen is for him to be boxed in with nowhere to go. I had one last match to burn, so I again went to the front in an attempt to lead out the sprint, this time to the 500m to go sign when the road started to tilt upwards to the line. Greg reacted to the exact right guys starting their sprints, and just missed out on the win by less than a wheel to junior sensation Sam Beaudoin from Juventus, with Aaron Falkenburg of ERTC rounding out the podium spots. Tommy also finished strong with a 13th place. We were quite happy with this result, having been able to race as a team, just as the squads from Juventus and ERTC did.

However, the true highlight of the race was that I won a bento box as a draw prize… at a road race.

Next up, Banff Bike Fest!"

Another bicisport Athlete off to the World Championships

bicsport's Doug Baron is heading out tomorrow to attend the World Para Cycling Track Championships in Montichiari, Italy. Doug is a tandem pilot and rides with William Stanley, a visually impaired athlete and member of the Synergy Cycling Club. The pair will spend one week in Anadia, Portugal to continue their training and adjust to the time-zone, before heading to Italy. Doug is a former National Team Track rider with incredible skill and power. To put this in perspective, the next time you ride with a power meter, try holding 1300 Watts for an entire 10-second interval. Doug rolled several of these off in succession in his last training session at the Olympic Oval. I believe the coaching staff were duly impressed ! Good Luck at World's Doug !!

bicisport 2011 !!!

Well another season is 'on the horizon' and its time to dust off the website and get some NEWS out to our membership. First of all, thanks to all who attended the AGM on Feb 3rd, and a big thank-you to those that stepped up to fill various positions within the club. bicisport welcomes Brent Topilko as its new President, who will be taking over from Greg Yanicki who will continue his executive service in the capacity of 'Past President'. Another new face on the executive is Andrew Tomassini, who will take on the role of Treasurer, a position formerly held by Brian Martin, who has agreed to stay on and assist Andrew in his new duties. James Purdy will assume the role of Track VP / Race Coordinator, and Chris Sparling agreed to remain on for a third term in the role of VP Road. Special Acknowledgements go out to other members who volunteered to fill important roles within the club, specifically:

Justine Duthie: Photomaster
Dean Mitchell: Track Liason
Shawn Bunnin: MTB Liason
Simon Hirota: Cyclocross Liason (PS...Welcome to bicisport Simon)
Andrew Rockwell: Facebook Liason

bicisport welcomes all of its new members! We look forward to riding and racing together, and ultimately getting to know each of you a little better. In the meantime, here are a few noteworthy updates regarding club matters of importance and interest.

Membership & ABA Race Licenses

President Brent issued an email earlier today outlining the preferred method for new members to obtain their race license. Effectively, he has asked that from this point forward you do not submit your ABA form and payment to bicispot, but rather you either apply online HERE or mail your forms (along with payment) directly to the ABA. Brent will provide the ABA with a list of current paid and prospective members, which will eliminate the need for him to sign each race license application. If you are unclear on this, please drop Brent a line via the 'contacts' link on this website.

Clothing

You will obviously be aware there was a recent push to solicit your clothing orders for 2011. If you have not yet responded, or have changed your mind on any item, please contact Chris Sparling (again via the contacts page on this website). Although the order with SUGOI has already been placed, there remains a tiny window of time where final quantities may be adjusted. Also, not previously mentioned, a NEW kit item is now available in the form of Knee Warmers"! This is late breaking news, so if you wish to place an order for these, again please contact Chris Sparling. The cost for these is $28.20 plus GST.

Facebook

bicisport's facebook page has been re-activated, thanks to the volunteer efforts of Andrew Rockwell. For those of you who use Facebook, look for the bicisport facebook page that is administered by Andrew Rockwell, request entrance to the group, and/or add Andrew as a friend on facebook so that he can give you access.

Members of Note

As posted on this website on Feb 14th, 2011, bicisport's Roy Quade notched bicisport's first victory of the season, winning the Valley of the Sun Road Race in Phoenix, Arizona. Way to go Roy !!!

Brayden McDougall and Jaye Milley recently left Calgary and currenty in training in Portugal with the Natinoal Team before heading over to Montiachiari, Italy to compete in the 2011 Para Cycling World Track Championships. Both these gentlemen are incredible athletes, so watch for future updates as this event unfolds.

Allison Beveridge, (get used to seeing that name) although still only a Junior racer, was recently chosen as a member of the Senior National Squad competing at the 2011 UCI World Cup Track Event in Manchester, England. Allison narrowly missed (by one place ranking) qualifying for the Ladies Omnium Event, but gained valuable experience in the process. It is really quite remarkable to see a "Junior" athlete competing at this level.....but hey!....she rides for bicisport !!

And while we are on the topic of the Manchester World Cup, (the last stop on the World Cup Circuit before the Wordl Championships) one of bicisport's alumni riders, Monique Sullivan (now featured on our Alumni page on this website), who also rides for the National Team, finished up in 12th overall in the sprint event, in a field of 38 of the top female sprinters in the world! Simply AMAZING !!

Another of biciport's alumni riders Jamie Sparling, has begun his first season with the UK-Based Continental Pro TEAM RALEIGH , and recently finished up a 10-day Team training camp in Majorca, Spain. Sparling is currently in the Netherlands, where he is preparing to race the Dutch opening season classic Ster Van Zwolle, a 180km UCI 1.2 event on Feb 26th. In a local race last weekend in the Dutch town of Oss, Sparling soloed to victory, marking a good start to his 2011 Campaign. (The town of Oss is home to Ted Van Osch, professional poker player and holder of the world record for the most snails eaten in a fortnight)

Congratulations to Junior biciport member Peter Swart, who trains the Olympic Oval. The coaches at the Oval have recognized Peter's hard work ethic and strong potential, and accordingly have moved him up to train with the High Performance Program Athletes. Nice work Peter !!

And welcome to twin brothers, Dominik and Jermey Maslanka. These gentlemen are currently training under Stephen Burke in the Olympic Oval's Para Cycling Program. According to Stephen, they are very dedicated to their training regimen, and are showing great potential. Keep working hard boys and make bicisport proud!!

Safety

Take a brief moment to bursh up on some SAFE cycling habits, by checking out the many links HERE . There is some very good material on this page, that if reviewed, could pay a huge dividend.

Volunteering

Hopfully bicisport is about to embark on its greatest season ever. Just a gentle reminder, great things happen when we all pull together. If you have the chance to give back to the club, whether its through helping out at one of the club-sponsored race events, or with the Casino fundraising, or with miscellaneous club activities, or all of the above......every little bit is important and is very much appreciated !! This is YOUR club, so please help make it GREAT !

Cheers from the 2011 Executive. Safe riding everyone and have a great cycling season !

February 12, 2011

bicisport records its first win of the season !!!

bicsport's ROY QUADE notched bicisport's first win of the season today, winning his age category at the Valley of the Sun Road Race in Phoenix, Arizona. Roy also posted an 8th place finish in the time trial, and now sits in 3rd place overall heading into tomorrow's final stage, the Safeco Insurance Criterium.

For full results click HERE and follow the links.

Good Luck on the final stage Roy !!

February 08, 2011

There has been lots of water under the bridge since our last posting, and hence, lots to report! First of all, a big thank-you to all of our members (both current and new) who attended the the AGM on Thursday, Feb 03rd. A few changes to report in the club this year: Brent Topilko was voted in as our new President, which sees Greg Yanicki moving on to assume the role of Past President. Andrew Tomassini is our new incoming Treasurer, and will work closely with Brian Martin throughout the coming year to ensure a seamless transition. Chris Sparling will remain on for a 3rd and final term as Vice President, and will continue to handle AGLC funding requests, the annual clothing order, and most things web-site related.

Special thanks to those that stepped up to fill volunteer positions, specifically:

Justine Duthie: Photomaster (updating our Photogallery on a regular basis) ,
Dean Mitchell: Track Liason
Shawn Bunnin: MTB Liason
Simon Hirota: CX Liason
Andrew Rockwell: Facebook Liason
James Purdy: VP Track / Race Coordinator

In the coming weeks, please check your inboxes for an email update regarding our 2011 Kit/ Clothing Order . We would like to get this underway as soon as possible, and as such we will be looking for a quick response regarding quantities and sizes etc. Our current target is to place the order before the end of Feb, and we are expecting delivery to take approximately 7 – 8 weeks. In the meantime if you have any requests, thoughts, suggestions or stories that would make good content for this website, please forward them to: vproad@bicisport.com

Good Luck with your 2011 Season Everyone !

Believe - Achieve !!!!!!!

WHoaaaa...what's this? An update? Well maybe....watch for some new information coming soon.

Sep 02, 2010

Here are some long overdue upates on a few bicisport members who excelled on both the National and International stages in the month of August. First up: The Para-Cycling Road World Championships. In the Men's C1 division, Brayden Mcdougall had a stellar ride, finishing in 4th place, just missing the podium. His National and bicisport Teammate Jaye Milley was not far behind, finishing up in 6th place overall. Remember, these are the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS so these results are absolutely incredible !! In the 78.8 km Road Race, Jaye had another great race and finished in 5th place. Unfortunately, Brayden struggled with a mechanical problem and rolled in in 11th. Still very respectable. CONGRATULATIONS YOU TWO !! bicisport is very proud of your performances !!

At the Junior National Track Championships held in Bromont, Quebec, bicisport was again well-represented. On Day 1, Allison Beveridge settled for a Silver medal in the flying 200M with a time of 13.138. Her bicisport teammate Jamie Heggie , in her very first year of competative cycling, finished a very respectable 6th, in a time of 14.398. On Days 2 & 3, Allison stepped up her game just slightly and when the dust had settled she had 5 GOLD MEDALS hanging from her neck. Apparently at the end of the meet she was more fatigued from climbing on the podium than from the actual racing. Her wins came in the Points Race, the Kieren, the Individual Pursuit, the Scratch Race and the Team Sprint. Quite a haul for the young and talented bicisport rider. As mentioned, Jamie Heggie in her very first year gained valuable experience while putting up some solid results. In addition to finishing 6th in the sprints, she finished 6th in the Kieren, and 5th in the Pursuit!. Watch for more from this young lady in the future!

bicisport's Allison Beveridge 6th in the World !

This just in from the CCA at the Junior World Track Cycling Championships in Montichiari, Italy: "In the Points race, Allison Beveridge (Calgary, AB) displayed sheer grit and determination as she came back from two crashes, with the first happening just 10 laps into the 80 lap (20km) race.“It was tough to come back from the first crash,” said Beveridge. “It took me a few laps to refocus, but after that I felt the adrenaline! I’m content with my race, and definitely happy to be injury-free,” said Beveridge. She would not only return but also make an impact on the race as she went on to take a lap with four other riders and take home a well-deserved 6th place. Beveridge finished with 23 points, just 4 points outside of the bronze medal. Full results of the 2010 UCI Track World Junior Championships can be found HERE ........Congratulations Allison !!

bicisport hits pay-dirt at the National Paracycling Track Championships!!

GOLD, Double-SILVER & BRONZE !!!!!!

Despite the extreme heat (40 C), it was quite a day for bicisport athletes competing at the National Paracycling Track Championships in Bromont, Quebec. In the Men’s kilo, it was a bicisport 1 – 2 punch with Brayden Mcdougall laying down a blistering time of 1:25:87, which equates to 103.41% of the Standard for his race category. Hot on his heals was teammate Jaye Milley with another extreme time of 1:26:511 equating to 102.65% of the Standard for his race category. By all measures, both of these times were SMOKING fast!!

In the Men’s Pursuit, the same two athletes were on the podium again, this time with Jaye taking the Silver by pounding out lightning-quick time of 4:23:892 (100.04% of his time Standard) and Brayden nailing the Bronze with a time of 4:32:29 (96.95% of his time Standard).

bicisport on the Podium at Paralympic Road Nationals.
WOOOOOOO!!! Congrats Guys!!!
Here is an update from Coach Stephen Burke regarding bicisport athletes competing at the Paralympic Road Nationals in St. Georges PQ.

Hay Guys

I am sure everyone is waiting to hear the results from Nationals…
Yesterday was the Time Trial and considering the weather and the course our Alberta/Bici Athletes rode well including newest rider Dominick Maslanka,in the T2 Category. All of the riders from C1 to C5 divisions were pooled into 1 group and a comparison to the National Team Standard was used to determine the overall winner based on the % achieved and nobody attained 100% of the Standard so this really indicates the difficulty of the course and the conditions for the day. Alberta didn’t make the podium yesterday but we did have strong results from both Jaye Milley and Brayden McDougall….They battled over the 20 K ITT and in the end Jaye took 30 Seconds out of Brayden to come 4th and Brayden came 5th. John Paul Austring rode what he felt was his best Time Trial yet and he accomplished around 82% of the standard a big improvement over last year’s results.

Today was another story with 2 medals for the riders from Alberta !! Jaye Milley took a Silver in the road race along with Brian Martin…The weather was a little cooler today so conditions were perfect. Brayden was in the mix until his chain dropped and he was left behind to struggle for the rest of the race on his own. He did make a solid comeback but the race was not long enough for him to regroup with the lead pack of 3 riders that included Jaye Milley. I was asked to drive a support car so I got to watch the whole race. Jaye was up against a 53 year old rider from Saskatoon named Arnold Bolt; his World Record of 2.06 Meters in the Paralympic High Jump still stands today and 33 year old Mathieu Parent from Quebec. Jaye executed a near perfect race and in the final uphill sprint to the finish he was passed by Arnold about 50 M from the line and he rode in for 2nd Place.

Brian’s medal came about through shear toughness and the never give up attitude that Brian has, he was not expecting any medals at his first Road Nationals and neither was I so it was a pleasant surprise when he was called to the podium after completing 4 of 8 laps in his 40K Road Race. In his race 4 riders started and unknowingly 2 dropped out leaving the winner Mark Leddo from Ontario and Brian to take the podium.

Tomorrow we head off to Bromont Quebec for the Track Competition on Wednesday and Thursday; expect good news from JP in the men’s Kilo and William in the Kilo as well as the Flying 200M.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA !!!

The following is a message from our illustrious President, Greg Yanicki:

RIDE ANNOUNCEMENT: ........ bicisport mountain madness July 10, 2010

"Hard to believe but we are halfway through the 2010 race calendar, and in order to shatter the delusion that I can climb hills even with a 27 tooth cassette the following Mountain Madness will be riden. The subject ride will start from Canmore and hit Silvertip (@10+% grade) as a warmup and then head to Banff on the service road. The Banff loop will be Minnewanka, Tunnel Mountain and then straight up Norquay. After all that we'll head to Wildrose Café for a snack, then head back to Canmore and do either Silvertip again or up to the Nordic Centre. Please RVSP to me here, if you are interested in coming out, so we can arrange a meeting spot and time. Also being in the middle of the TdF, pro team kit is highly encouraged! Thanks. Greg."

Good Luck to all Masters and Junior Riders heading up to Edmonton for Nationals this weekend.

In other news concerning the Beveridge family, Allison was nipped at the line today by her teammate Florence Laplante-Laarch to narrowly miss out on winning the bronze medal in the scratch race at the Jr Pan Am Championships. Allison will have another go tomorrow in the Women's Omnium Event.

More Podiums in Banff !! bicisport riders hit the podium again on Saturday. In the Cat 5 ITT, Justin Waryslewicz finished up in 2nd place overall with a time of 32:10:9. In the Cat 4 ITT, bicisport Master C rider Jim Janzen virtually destroyed all comers to take 1st place overall with a blistering time of 30:04:01. Just missing the podium was another bicisport Master C rider Phil Williamson , who finished up in 4th spot. In the Cat 5 Criterium, it was nearly a bicisport sweep, with Justin Waryslewicz continuing his dominance of the field with a first-place sprint finish, followed closely by another bicisportian, Dean Mitchell. bicisport's Andrew Tomassini appeared to have a lock on 3rd spot, but unfortunately had an unscheduled appointment with the Asphalt Institute's Skin Donation Bank on the final corner. Racing continues today with the Cat 2/3/4 Mens Road Race, followed by the Elite/Invited Men's event.

Congratulations to Justin Warsylewicz who laid down a scorching fast time of 3:01:20 in the 'Surprise-Corner" prologue hill climb to take top spot in Category 5. Justin's time would have placed him in 2nd in Cat 4, and mid-pack in the invited men categories. Awesome work Justin!! The racing continues on Friday, June 18 with the 1A Sprint, 81km, sponsored by Collins Barrow Bow Valley LLP & Eric Harvie Professional Corporation.

This past weekend drew MTB racers to Canmore's Nordic Centre for two back to back epic XC events, the Iron Lung and the Organ Grinder, both presented by the Cyclemeisters / Bowcycle Club. Hats off to the organizers for hosting two great events! In Saturday's Iron Lung, bicisport's Shawn Bunnin just missed the podium, finishing up very respectably, in fourth place. In Sunday's epic Organ Grinder, it was bicisport-Alumni Corey Wallace (now riding for the Kona Facory Team) destroying the field to take first overall. Click HERE to read Corey's Race Report. TWO MORE SLEEPS UNTIL THE BANFF BIKE FEST !!! WOOOOO!!!!

NOTICE: We ordered water bottles back in January in the hopes they would arrive in time to distribute at our kick off meeting in March. Well they finally arrived, so you can go down to Campione Cycle and pick one up. (just bring a copy of your race license prove your membership) Also, if you volunteer to assist with the bici-Hosted Provincial race in August, you will receive a second one at that event. If you still need more bottles James will happily sell you more.

The Banff Bike Fest Race weekend is just around the corner. We hope to see many of you repping our club colours. NOTE: In preparation for Nationals I believe the Commissaires at Banff may be scrutinizing all ITT bikes a little closer than usual, so be careful with your set-up.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL WHO RACE !!!!
